We are looking for a seasoned Database Engineer to support a strategic modernization initiative for our customer. In this role, you will collaborate with architects and developers to migrate legacy monolithic SQL Server systems into a modern, distributed PostgreSQL environment on AWS—enabling a transition to .NET Core and Microservices.

Job requirements

Key Responsibilities

  • Migration Execution: Execute data and schema migrations from SQL Server to PostgreSQL, ensuring data integrity and minimal downtime during cutover.

  • Architectural Support: Collaborate with lead architects to implement database designs that support monolith decomposition into microservices (database-per-service patterns).

  • Modernization Collaboration: Partner with .NET engineering teams to refactor T-SQL logic (stored procedures, functions) into PostgreSQL-compatible patterns, supporting migration to modern .NET (EF Core).

  • Cloud Implementation: Configure, optimize, and manage AWS RDS for PostgreSQL or Amazon Aurora to ensure scalability, reliability, and operational excellence.

  • Performance Tuning: Analyze and optimize queries in the new PostgreSQL environment, addressing performance gaps resulting from the database engine transition.

  • Team Collaboration: Serve as a bridge between the legacy data team and the modernization team, sharing best practices on PostgreSQL locking, vacuuming, and isolation levels.

Required Skills & Tools

  • Core Database Engines: Expert-level Microsoft SQL Server (10+ years) and strong PostgreSQL experience (5+ years).

  • Migration Toolset: Proficiency with AWS Schema Conversion Tool (SCT), AWS DMS, and AWS modernization assistants (e.g., Microservice Extractor, Babelfish).

  • Cloud Platforms: Extensive experience with AWS RDS and Aurora PostgreSQL.

  • Development Context: Understanding of .NET Core / .NET 6+ modernization and Microservices architecture.

  • Scripting: Experience with PowerShell, Python, or Bash for automation.
